Council Meeting Highlights from April 15, 2026 Meeting

Council members and community members presenting and receiving resolution honoring Mae MacClendon

Town Council met for a regular meeting on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. in Chapel Hill Town Hall. Full agenda and meeting minutes are here. Highlights of the meeting include:  

Resolution Honoring and Celebrating Mae McLendon 

Council unanimously adopted a resolution honoring Mae McLendon, who passed away on March 17th and dedicated her life to public service and social justice, serving on numerous boards and giving her time and talent to many local nonprofits.  

Earth Day Proclamation 

Council proclaimed April 22 as Earth Day in Chapel Hill and encouraged residents to join in activities that protect our environment, support biodiversity, promote sustainability, and honor our shared responsibility to safeguard the Earth for future generations.  

Volunteer Week Proclamation 

Council proclaimed April 27 – May 4 as Volunteer Appreciation Week and encouraged residents to join in recognizing, celebrating, and supporting those who make our community stronger through their service.  

Poetry Month Proclamation 

Council proclaimed April as Poetry Month and encouraged residents to celebrate the power of poetry and to honor the poets who preserve and remind us that we are all part of a greater narrative rooted in creativity, compassion, and shared purpose.  

Resolution of Intent to Consider Changes to Town Council Size and Mayor’s Term 

Council voted 8-1 to adopt a Resolution of Intent to consider an ordinance amending the Town Charter to reduce the size of Town council from eight members and a mayor to six members and a mayor and to increase the Town Mayor’s term from 2 to 4 years.  

Council called a public hearing on the proposed ordinance on Wednesday, April 29 at 6 pm in Council chamber. Council will consider enacting the ordinance at its regular meeting on Wednesday, May 6 at 6 pm in Council chamber.  

Update on Climate Action Plan  

Council received an update about progress on the Town’s Climate Action Plan, adopted in 2021. Staff shared that the Town is ahead of schedule on reaching climate goals and that they will soon engage the community in an update to the plan.
