Community members and Council during Bike Month Proclamation presentation

Town Council met for a regular meeting on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. in Chapel Hill Town Hall. Full agenda and meeting minutes are here. Highlights of the meeting include:  

Bike Month Proclamation

Council proclaimed May as Bike Month in Chapel Hill and encouraged everyone to participate in Bike Month programs and make cycling a regular part of getting around throughout the year.

Small Business Week Proclamation

Council proclaimed May 3 - 9 to be Small Business Week in Chapel Hill and encouraged everyone to shop small and support local businesses.

Period Poverty Awareness Week

Council proclaimed May 11 - 17 as Period Poverty Awareness Week in Chapel Hill and encouraged everyone who is able to donate to organizations that collect and distribute period products.

Public Hearing on Proposed Charter Amendments

Council opened and closed a public hearing to receive input on proposed amendments to the Town charter to reduce the Council size from eight to six and extend the Mayor's term from two years to four years.

Update on Southern Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ)

Council received a staff presentation about the development opportunities and constraints in a portion of the Southern ETJ.
