The Town of Chapel Hill is pruning and trimming trees along Franklin Street from October 15 through 17 to support their long-term health and appearance. Community members may notice some on-street parking restrictions on Franklin Street during this time.
“Removing dead wood and trimming the tree canopy will help our downtown trees build stronger root systems and flourish in the future,” said Kevin Robinson, a Senior Manager who oversees the Town’s Parks Maintenance division, which is responsible for maintaining trees downtown.
The team is scheduling the upcoming work during UNC-Chapel Hill’s fall break to limit disruptions. Sarah Potter, the Town’s Business Vitality Manager, said “downtown will still be open for everyone to enjoy. Our goal is for us to complete this important project while community members can still visit their favorite shops and restaurants.”
Crews will move up and down Franklin Street, one side at a time, in a different section each day. On-street parking will be limited while they’re working in each section. The Town is asking drivers to slow down and be careful while passing by work zones.
Thursday, October 15: Crews will work on the north side of Franklin Street between Henderson Street and Church Street.
Friday, October 16: Crews will work on the north side of Franklin Street between Church Street and North Graham Street.
Saturday, October 17: Crews will work on the south side of Franklin Street between Henderson Street and North Graham Street. On-street parking will not be restricted between Granville Towers Lane and Mallette Street, as pruning is not needed there.
Community members should visit parkonthehill.com to find alternate parking options, including the new 125 E. Rosemary Street deck.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience with this project,” Robinson said. “We want these beautiful trees to provide shade and greenery for everyone to enjoy for many years to come.”
