Later this month, the Town of Chapel Hill plans to begin work to build the Fordham Boulevard Sidepath — a dedicated, paved space for cyclists and pedestrians along the busy road between Cleland Drive and Willow Drive.
“This is an exciting step forward in our ongoing work to expand our Everywhere to Everywhere Greenways network,” said Bergen Watterson, the Town’s Mobility and Greenways Manager. “It’s a critical part of our vision for a town that is more connected, and easier to navigate, regardless of where you’re going, and how you choose to get around.”
For folks walking, biking, and rolling, the new sidepath will improve access to Blue Hill, University Place, the Chapel Hill Community Center, and Rainbow Soccer Fields, among other local spots.
The new sidepath also supports the Town’s Vision Zero initiative, which strives to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2031 through a variety of traffic safety solutions.
In the coming days, a Town contractor will be on site to prepare for construction. As soon as September 28, crews will bring in heavy equipment which will eventually require the closure of the existing sidepath during construction.
“We know the path is in important part of the daily routines of many community members,” Watterson said. “We believe everyone’s patience during this closure will pay off in the long run when this great new connection is open and available to all.”
Staff expect crews to finish construction and open by winter of 2027. The construction is expected to cost $2.4 million and is funded primarily through federal transportation funding with 2024 general obligation bonds serving as a required local match.

Construction of the Fordham Boulevard Sidepath comes as the Town looks to the future of its Everywhere to Everywhere Greenways network.
Right now, the Town’s Office of Mobility and Greenways staff are seeking community feedback on potential future greenway routes. Residents can learn more, check out a map, and share thoughts by visiting our Everywhere to Everywhere engagement page..
