Parks and Recreation Adjusts Facility Hours Beginning July 6

Beginning Monday, July 6, Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation will adjust the regular operating hours of its facilities to better match the times community members use them and to ensure responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.

“We reviewed data from each facility and noticed that about 97% of visits happen between 6am and 8pm,” said Parks and Recreation Director Atuya Cornwell. “With that in mind, we’ll open a little later and close a little earlier at most facilities, and we’ll remain open during our busiest times.”

Parks and Recreation Division Manager Jonathan Ray and the department’s leadership team took a careful look at each facility while making the adjustments.

“Each of our spaces offers unique experiences, and our adjusted hours reflect those,” Ray said. “For example, Homestead Aquatic Center, which opens at 5:30am right now, will still open early, at 6am, for swimmers who start their day with us. And the Teen Center hours will continue to account for school and summertime schedules.”

Staff expect the adjustments to save about $70,000 each year, supporting the Town’s goal of long-term fiscal sustainability as operating costs rise.

The new hours include closures on Town holidays, consistent with the Chapel Hill Public Library. The adjustments also bring the Town closer to the operating hours of parks and recreation agencies across the Triangle. The changes do not affect the operating hours of the Town’s outdoor parks and recreation spaces.

“We know our facilities are part of the daily routines of many community members,” Cornwell said. “Our team is ready to support our visitors as we all get used to this new routine together.”
