Pedestrian Safety Improvements Coming to NC-54

Pedestrian and bicyclist safety improvements are coming to three key intersections on NC-54 in Chapel Hill and Carrboro.

On February 2, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) – in partnership with both Towns – is scheduled to begin work to install crosswalks with traffic signals at the following intersections:

· Kingswood Apartments (Chapel Hill)

· Abbey Lane (Carrboro)

· Westbrook Drive (Carrboro)

These new crossings will improve pedestrian safety near key Chapel Hill Transit stops. A 2019 NCDOT study endorsed by each Town called for these significant improvements.

What to Expect During Construction

Community members should expect slowdowns Monday through Friday between 9am and 4pm due to single-lane closures. Construction is expected to wrap up in December.
