Child Safety Seat Checks

Our team at Chapel Hill Fire Rescue partners with Safe Kids Orange County to promote education and awareness of safe car seat use. Providing a properly selected and installed child restraint is the best way to protect your young loved ones in the event of a motor vehicle accident.

Here are the details:

• Our child safety seat check clinics are free, and no appointment is necessary!
• Our weekly clinics are on Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
• Clinics are at Fire Station 2 (1003 S Hamilton Rd.)

What can you expect at a child safety seat check?

One of our certified child passenger seat safety technicians will inspect and install the car seat(s), from infant seats to boosters. They'll also provide information to you about how to use your car seat correctly at all stages of your child’s life. Our technicians will also answer any questions you might have during the clinic time.

What if the clinic hours don't work for you?

You can always submit a request for another time or call our office at 919-969-2781 during business hours.

Do you need a car seat?

We don't have car seats to distribute, but you can contact the Safe Kids Orange Community Car Seat Program.

The UNC Health Injury Prevention Coordinator leads the Safe Kids Orange County coalition and oversees the distribution and referral process for car seats in our area.

• Participating public agencies such as WIC, Piedmont Health, Public Health, Social Services, school districts, and other non-profits can refer their clients and families to the program to receive a free car seat.

The program prioritizes Orange County residents, though we can provide information on other car seat resources in nearby counties if needed. If you're currently working with any public assistance programs, please ask that your care manager or employee place a referral for you. Referrals are fulfilled at permanent checking stations like the one at Chapel Hill Fire Rescue, where you can pick up the car seat and speak with a certified child passenger seat safety technician for help with installation. Due to limited resources and capacity of our certified technicians, these sites only take referrals through this program.
