File a Police Report

Our Virtual Report Unit is available to help you make certain non-emergency police reports by phone, in-person at the police department headquarters, or online at any time. If you need immediate assistance or need an officer to respond, call 911.

By Phone

Call 919-968-2760. The line is answered Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. If you leave a voicemail your call will be returned within the day, however, if you need a quicker response, please call 911.

In-person

Visit the Chapel Hill Police Department at 7300 Millhouse Road, Suite 150 Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Online Reports

You may file certain police reports online. When you make a report online, we will review your information. If we need more information, we will contact you. Please be as accurate and detailed as you can. Within three days, you will receive a case number and final report by email.

You can view incident and arrest reports online using the Report Center. Not all reports may be available on this site. If you need assistance, please call the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760.

If the incident took place outside of the Town of Chapel Hill, please call the police department or sheriff's office for the city or county where the incident took place.
If the incident happened on UNC's Chapel Hill campus, please call the UNC Police Department at 919-962-3951.
Filing a false report is a crime.

These are the types of reports the Virtual Report Unit will take:

Category	Description	Example
Harassment	Behavior that may be considered harassment includes repeated phone calls, letters, and text messages, that serve no legitimate purpose and cause a person emotional distress.	A former relationship continuously texts or calls.
Identity Theft	The fraudulent use of someone else's personal identifying information, often for financial gain. Examples of personal identifying information could be social security number, banking information, or name.	Someone opens a credit card account under your name without your permission.
Lost Property	When property is missing or lost within the town limits of Chapel Hill.	Property that is missing from your home, or items left behind at a business or park.
Phone Scams	When someone mispresents themselves or a service to intentionally make financial gain. This may be done by making promises and threats or asking you to pay in certain ways.	A person calls you regarding your computer being hacked and needing payment in gift cards to fix it.
Stolen Property	When property is taken without your permission. This does not include vehicles.	Items stolen from your yard, driveway, unenclosed porch or other common shared areas such as laundry facilities of apartment complexes.
Damage to Property	The act of defacing or damaging public or private property causing damage.	Graffiti, knocking over a mailbox, or breaking a window.
Theft from Vehicle	When someone enters your vehicle and either steals items or rummages through your belongs, even if nothing is stolen.	Someone breaks a vehicle window and steals your purse, or enters your unlocked vehicles and goes through items in your glove box.
Damage to Vehicle	The act of intentionally damaging or destroying vehicle property that belongs to someone else.	This could include damages to a vehicle such as graffiti, slashed tires, or keying.
