Resurfacing Projects with New Bike Lanes

Bike-lane-header.png

As part of our annual street resurfacing process, we look for opportunities to improve safety and mobility for everyone on Chapel Hill streets. Not only do we improve the quality of the pavement and adjust markings and signage, but we also implement recommendations from our adopted Mobility and Connectivity Plan when we can. Although resurfacing doesn't widen roads or add sidewalks, it often allows us to add bike lanes where there currently aren't any.

NCDOT has a similar resurfacing process and consults with us to identify opportunities for improvements on State-owned roads.

Upcoming NCDOT Projects

N. Estes Dr. from Caswell Rd. to Library Dr.
  • This overnight work is tentatively scheduled to start June 18. The contractors will work from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
  • Depending on the weather, the work should take about a week.
  • You can expect to see new bike lanes between Caswell and Library Dr. as part of the resurfacing and a new crosswalk at Halifax after the resurfacing.
Homestead Rd. between Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and Old Fayetteville Rd. (including Carrboro)
  • We expect the contractor to start patching tentatively on June 22 and paving to start the following week.
  • This project will add bike lanes between where they end at the railroad tracks to High School Rd.
  • They're also removing the left-turn lane at Sterling Bridge Rd.

Recently Completed Town Projects

Pinehurst Dr. from Burning Tree Dr. to Ephesus Church Rd.
  • There's fresh pavement and new bike lanes on this stretch of Pinehurst Dr.
  • This is a very wide street. As part of the resurfacing, bike lanes replaced space that is sometimes used for parking.
  • Adding these bikes lanes is part of our adopted Mobility and Connectivity Plan. They'll also help connect NC-54 to Ephesus Church Rd.
Bolinwood Dr. from Hillsborough St. to the Bolin Creek Trail
  • There's fresh pavement on all of Bolinwood Dr. and new bike lanes on this small stretch.
  • As part of resurfacing, bike lanes replaced space that is sometimes used for parking.
  • Adding these bike lanes provides a safe connection from Hillsborough St. to the Bolin Creek Trail.
