Requesting an Inspection
You can request an inspection of work completed under Town-issued permits online, by phone, or by email. You must book each inspection individually. Visit this page for information about inspection fees.
Request an Inspection Online
Log into your account in the Online Permit Center, open the permit, and review the inspection list on the left-hand side of the page. This list shows the inspections that apply to your project. Click the inspection schedule and request a date using the calendar feature. In the "notes" section, please enter the name and phone number of the person who will be on site.
Request an Inspection by Phone or Email
You can request inspections by calling 919-968-2718 or by emailing permits@townofchapelhill.org. Have your permit number ready on the phone or include it in your email.
What to Expect on Inspection Day
On the day of your scheduled inspection, an inspector will call in the morning to provide a two-hour window for the inspection. Someone 18 or older must be there during the inspection and your property must be open and accessible.
We typically conduct inspections of footings, slabs, and sewer services during morning hours. We strive to perform all inspections on the day their scheduled. If there is a delay, we prioritize the inspection for the next available business day. We reserve same-day inspections for emergencies like loss of water or heat.

Inspection Cancellations
To avoid a reinspection fee, you must request a cancellation by 9:30am the day of the scheduled inspection. For large-scale projects, the cancellation deadline is 3pm the day before the scheduled inspection.
To request a cancellation, call 919-968-2718 or email permits@townofchapelhill.org. You can't request a cancellation through the Online Permit Center. Have your permit number ready on the phone or include it if emailing.
Viewing Inspection Results
You can view the results of your inspection by logging into your account in the Online Permit Center. If we require a reinspection, you'll repeat the same process.
