When deciding which court to choose, keep these things in mind:

  • All parks in Chapel Hill are open from dawn to dusk.
  • Facilities with lights are open as late as 11 p.m.

Shared-Use Spaces

Some Town courts and facilities are shared-use spaces so they can support different sports and community activities.

Reserved Use

Parks and Recreation and private rental groups may reserve any Town space for a wide variety of activities, including activities that are not normally allowed during public walk-up play.

  • Parks and Recreation might reserve a court signed “tennis only” for a water-balloon program
  • The Southern Community Park rinks can be rented for futsal, even though futsal is not allowed during open play.

Public Walk-Up Use

If a space isn’t reserved, it’s open for public walk-up on a first-come, first served basis. During walk-up times, the onsite signs explain what activities are allowed. These rules help keep play fair, safe, and predictable for everyone.

  • Southern Community Park Inline Rink offers public walk-up times for:
  • Open pickleball
  • Adult pick-up hockey
  • Open skating
  • Open hockey
  • Anyone may use the rink during unscheduled times.
  • However, pickleball is only allowed during its designated hours due to setup and cleanup required.
  • Ephesus Park includes pickleball-only courts, tennis-only courts, and shared courts.
  • On shared courts (courts 3 and 4 on the tennis side), tennis players have priority.
  • Pickleball players may use the shared courts when no tennis players are waiting.
  • Onsite signs explain the guidelines, and the golden rule applies – please be considerate of others.
