The Chapel Hill Police Department encourages everyone to celebrate Halloween safely, whether you’re trick-or-treating with family or enjoying a night out with friends.
While Halloween no longer brings the parking restrictions and road closures of celebrations many years ago, community members can expect to see more police officers downtown that evening to make sure everyone is safe.
Pedestrian Safety
Cross streets at intersections and use marked crosswalks whenever possible. Keeping your head up and your phone tucked away can help you stay aware of traffic.
Use sidewalks or designated walking paths whenever available. Where there are none, walking facing traffic and as far from the roadway as possible is a safer choice.
For trick-or-treaters, choose familiar, well-lit streets with fewer crossings.
Reminding children about looking for cars and avoiding crossings between parked vehicles can help.
Safe Driving
Slower speeds and extra attention can make a big difference especially in residential neighborhoods and areas with increased pedestrian activity.
Watch for children who may appear unexpectedly while crossing streets, at driveways, or between parked vehicles.
Turning headlights on around dusk can improve visibility.
Keeping distractions to a minimum helps everyone share the road safely.
Celebrate Responsibly
If alcohol is part of your plans, arrange for a safe ride by designating a driver, calling a rideshare service, or using public transportation.
Staying with friends and checking on one another can help everyone enjoy the celebration.
The Guardians wish everyone a safe and happy Halloween, with only the fun kind of scares.
