Add These Bike Month Events to Your Calendar

This May, the Town of Chapel Hill is celebrating National Bike Month with a series of community events packed with family fun.
“We’re inviting everyone to join in the celebration and joy of our strong local bike culture,” said Alyson West, the Town’s Safe Routes to School Coordinator. “Whether you’re a longtime cyclist, a beginner, or you’re interested in biking for the first time, we have something for you.”
Bike to School Day Roundtable
At 6pm on Tuesday, April 28, Bike Month kicks off early with a Bike to School Day Roundtable. Visit the Chapel Hill Public Library for pizza, freebies, and fun activities. Staff will help families think through ways to celebrate bike to school day, which is May 6, and plan a safe route to school.
Bike-Themed Movie in the Park
At sunset on Friday, May 8, Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation will host a bike-themed Movie in the Park featuring a short film by a local filmmaker and a screening of E.T. the Extra Terrestrial. At 6:30pm, before the screenings, staff with the Town’s Wheels of Wellness program will have bikes for children and teens to ride around.
RollFest 2026: The Wheel-y Wild West
At 10am on Saturday, May 16, bring your bike, skateboard, scooter, or any other way you roll to the Chapel Hill Community Center for a wheel-y good time! Staff will show you how to build your skills and stay safe.
“Through all of these events, we’re encouraging everyone to leave the car at home, which brings so many benefits,” West said. “For adults, biking is an easy way to reduce carbon emissions and has personal health benefits. For kids, learning to bike in a safe environment can build confidence and lifelong healthy habits.”
Get Involved on Your Own Schedule
Beyond the Town’s Bike Month events, there are plenty of other ways to participate:
“While this is a fun month of events, our goal is to celebrate biking as a great way to get around all year,” West said. “Even if you just check out a greenway or try a bike lane for the first time, it’s a win!”
