Plan Ahead: Community Center Closing for HVAC Upgrades
Published on March 05, 2026
Starting Monday, March 23, the Chapel Hill Community Center will close while crews replace the facility’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. The Town expects the Community Center to reopen in May.
“There’s never a good time to temporarily shut down a beloved gathering space in our community,” said Parks and Recreation Director Atuya Cornwell. “We expect to have everything back up and running in time for our summer programs.”
While the Community Center is closed, the inclusive playground, the Gene Strowd Rose Garden, the Bolin Creek Trail entrance, and other outside amenities will remain open, with one exception. The full parking lot will be closed for about two days while crews bring in a crane. The Town will share those dates as soon as they’re determined.
Community events like Magical Hill and Community Clay Studio programs will continue as scheduled.
Check Out Other Town Facilities
“For many people, the temporary Community Center closure means changes to daily routines, and we’re excited to invite folks to check out other Town facilities during the closure,” said Cornwell. “Staff at our other facilities are ready to welcome you and show you around.”
- If you’re looking to swim, check out the Homestead Aquatic Center, which offers educational, recreation and aquatic-related programming for all ages.
- Volleyball leagues will head to the Nate Davis Sr. Gym at the Hargraves Community Center and the gym at Rashkis Elementary. This schedule will be out soon.
- Morning indoor pickleball programs will move to Ephesus Park and Southern Community Park. Learn more about these facilities here.

The HVAC project at the Community Center is part of a project that began last year, with similar work to replace the HVAC system at the Hargraves Community Center. Funding for all the work comes from the Town’s annual pay go capital allocation.
“We know this project requires some patience and we’re grateful for the support of our community members,” said Cornwell. “We can’t wait to welcome everyone back to an improved Community Center.”
